MrSID File format

MrSID (pronounced Mister Sid) is an acronym that stands for multiresolution seamless image database. It is a file format (filename extension .sid) developed and patented by LizardTech for encoding of georeferenced raster graphics, such as orthophotos. See complete article about MrSID in wikipedia.

MrSID OpenJUMP reader

Opens aerial or satellite photos in MrSid format (.SID extension).

Note
This function is deactivated for default. To activate it user must copy the needed binaries into OpenJUMP as explained below.

Supported platforms

Tested and approved [22/04/2013] for Linux (with oracle jre) and Windows. Should theoretically work on Solaris as well.

See also The JUMP Pilot Project feature request - MrSID on non-windows platforms.

Installation

Note
for OpenJUMP 1.6.1 or older versions, see below

(1) download MrSID executables from LizardTech website. In april 2013, the download is available in the Downloads > Tools & Utilities as GeoExpress CommandLine Utilities. Download the distribution matching your operating system (eg. geoexpress_commandlineutils_win.zip for Windows) and unzip the file,

(2) copy all files of the bin/ folder of the above extracted archive into the lib/native/ directory of your OpenJUMP installation, eg. for Windows these are

    • mrsidgeodecode.exe
    • mrsidgeoinfo.exe
    • mrsidgeometa.exe
    • geos.dll

(3) Restart OpenJUMP and look if you can load the files

(4) Check the Window > Console output for errors in case the Open Dialog does not offer you to open *.sid files.

If you encounter problems with the new Lizard extensions, download the old mrsidinfo.exe file here

Old installation

Old OpenJUMP version : Up to version 1.6.1 (version 1.6.1 included), the default folder for MrSID executable was in lib/ext/ETC folder, and the default for temporary images was in lib/ext/ETC/TMP. You can check if the option to load "MrSID" files is offered in the file load dialog.
