MrSID File format

MrSID (pronounced Mister Sid) is an acronym that stands for multiresolution seamless image database. It is a file format (filename extension .sid) developed and patented by LizardTech for encoding of georeferenced raster graphics, such as orthophotos. See complete article about MrSID in wikipedia.

MrSID OpenJUMP reader

MrSID

Opens aerial or satellite photos in MrSid format (.SID extension).

This function is deactivated for default. To activate it user must install the MrSid executable in OpenJUMP.

Installing MrSID executable in OpenJUMP (for OpenJUMP 1.6.1 or older versions, see below)

(1) download MrSID executable from LizardTech website. In 2013, april, the executable is available in the "Downloads > Tools & Utilities" as GeoExpress CommandLine Utilities. Download the distribution matching your OS (ex. geoexpress_commandlineutils_win.zip for windows) and unzip the file,

(2) go to the bin directory and copy the 4 following files to the lib/native directory of your openjump installation

    • mrsidgeodecode.exe
    • mrsidgeoinfo.exe
    • mrsidgeometa.exe
    • geos.dll

(3) Start OpenJUMP and look if you can load the files

(4) OpenJUMP will store temporary files in lib/native/tmp folder. It will attempt to create the folder if it does not exist. This directory must have read/write permissions. This trick probably works only for MS Windows based Operative Systems.

If you encounter problems with the new Lizard extensions, download the old mrsidinfo.exe file here

Old OpenJUMP version : Up to version 1.6.1 (version 1.6.1 included), the default folder for MrSID executable was in lib/ext/ETC folder, and the default for temporary images was in lib/ext/ETC/TMP. You can check if the option to load "MrSID" files is offered in the file load dialog.

MrSID (non Windows users): See The JUMP Pilot Project feature request - [https//sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=997723&aid=1803634&group_id=118054 MrSID on non-windows platforms]. Note that the advice may not work on all systems.
